Google Mail Gmail will stop supporting basic HTML view next January

On September 25, Google Mail officially announced that it will stop supporting basic HTML view in January 2024, after which Gmail will automatically change to standard view.

In basic HTML view, Gmail won't support the following features:

  • chat
  • Spell checking tool
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Add or import contacts
  • Custom sender address
  • Rich text formatting

It is understood that the web version of Gmail currently provides two interfaces: basic HTML view and standard view. When HTML view support is stopped, basic HTML view mode URLs that currently have classic mode turned on are automatically redirected to the standard view interface. Google explains that Gmail will automatically open in standard view if the browser is supported.

Once Standard View is the only display mode available for Gmail on the web, unsupported browsers may not load, and the following browsers are currently supported (cookies and JavaScript are enabled regardless of which one you use):
